A wrecked mining vessel is an unnamed location in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. It is part of the Galactic War debris and wreckage that ended up in the Nova Corps's restricted Quarantine Zone.

Story[]

Once part of the DSOR mining colony, this vessel was marked as a "plague ship" when the fleet was ravaged by a deadly outbreak. However, chief scientist Raker found a mysterious man, Adam Warlock, who was able to heal the colonists. They began to worship him and formed the Universal Church of Truth during the Galactic War, and this vessel converted to the sect. Adam once performed one of his miracles here, curing a man called Jxllem by his friends' request.

Also in this vessel ocurred the disastrous separation between Warlock and the gem on his forehead, believing the stone to be corrupting his soul. The explosion ripped the ship apart from the inside, leaving radiation unlike anything on record. Raker was forced to evacuate while Adam himself disappeared, and the gem lay abandoned for the next twelve years. Although the mining rig had no direct involvement in the war, the Worldmind decided to seal the vessel inside the Nano-Resin restricted zone and marked off-limits because of the potential health risks to corpsmen. In time, a stray Acanti chose the ship as its nesting ground.

Peter Quill hears from a "lady friend" of the mining rig's monster. Hoping to catch and sell it to Lady Hellbender, the Guardians of the Galaxy illegally enter the Zone and place thumpers around the ship before going inside. Peter and Rocket find the gem that pops from a cluster of spacebugs. Peter grabs it, but can't hold it for long in his hand, since it causes immense pain. They are shocked when a strange entity slips from the stone and goes away, but they downplay the encounter and go on with the mission, reuniting with the rest of the team to place the last thumper. They capture a space llama instead of the Acanti. Before they can attempt to catch it, the strange entity attacks the whale and they are forced to flee the Quarantine Zone on the Milano. However, they are intercepted by the Hala's Hope.

After Captain Ko-Rel agrees to let the Guardians go with a three-cycle limit to pay a fine, she leads a small investigation team into the mining vessel. Unbeknownst to Ko-Rel, her daughter Nicholette Gold stows away in their shuttle. The mission ends in tragedy when the strange entity kills Ko-Rel and possesses Nikki, who ends up with the Soul Stone embedded in her hand. Grieving over her mother, she is taken over by the Promise and returns to Hala's Hope to become the Matriarch, the new "divine vessel" to Raker's Church.

Gameplay[]

The mining ship is the center piece of the mission in Chapter 1: A Risky Gamble, where the Guardians hope to catch a rare monster for Lady Hellbender. They plan to place a Thumper, a contraption built by Rocket, at this location. This area, like the whole first chapter, contains a couple of tutorials. Players learn about Huddle, Stagger Bar and how to use the Guardians Mode menu to give orders.

The ship becomes relevant once again in Chapter 7: Canine Confusion when the Guardians learn that Ko-Rel led an investigation here while they were busy on Seknarf Nine in Chapter 3: The Cost of Freedom and Chapter 4: The Monster Queen, and that in Chapter 2: Busted it was Raker's true objective and why he was captured by Nova Corps.

WRECKED MINING VESSEL

Several interstellar mining vessels can be found within the Quarantine Zone wreckage. Though they were not directly involved in the Galactic War, they were recovered from the the DSOR mining colony after a deadly outbreak ravaged its flee. Many of these "plague ships" were marked for containment.

One particular ship appears to be the chosen nesting ground of a stray "Acanti", but Nova Corps has not tried to capture the massive beast. The wreckage has been marked off-limits. Clearly some sort of explosion ripped it apart from the inside, but the residual radiation is unlike anything on record. Unwilling to risk the health of Nova Corpsman, the Worldmind decided to seal the vessel inside the nano-resin tomb with the rest of the debris.
