Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Wiki

Thanos' personal army is a mentioned-only unnamed organization in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. A once mighty military force allied with the Chitauri Empire during the Galactic War, it crumbled after the defection of Thanos' daughter Gamora and the subsequent death of Thanos himself.

Background[]

Determined to wipe out vast swaths of life to court Lady Death, Thanos left countless planets barren and the few survivors of these worlds were abducted to become soldiers or servants in his personal army to fuel his decades-long onslaught. Some, like Garek and Rosson Blood, would willingly join him in their own thirst for destruction and mayhem. In his conquests, Thanos abducted two young girls—Gamora Zen-Whoberi and Nebula—and raised them as his own daughters, as well as his pet assassins.

Sometime prior to 7786, Thanos aligned himself and his forces with the Chitauri Empire to start the Galactic War, which began with the destruction of Xandar. During the war, Thanos led an attack on Katath, tricking its defense force into chasing a Chitauri decoy away from the planet. With his personal squadron he razed a large portion of the planet, including the entirety of Lugradus. Upon the return of the Katathian military from space, Drax sought to avenge his wife and daughter and rallied a small army to attack Thanos. However, Thanos prevailed and spared their lives, humiliating them; he and his forces later abandoned the planet.

As the war progressed, Thanos grew obsessed with destroying the Resistance, led by Richard Rider. To that end, he ordered Gamora and Nebula to search the galaxy for their location. Gamora succeeded in her task, but defected upon learning that Thanos had started the war not to "restore balance", but to appease Death herself. By 7789,[2] Thanos' forces were winning the war. Thanos himself was on a moon in the Black Quadrant when Drax—aided by Mentor and Chronus' sorcery—found him. The two would fight for several days across the moon, ending with Drax apparently killing Thanos. With the news of his alleged death, the Kree Empire and Resistance fleets mounted a surprise attack on Chitauri Prime, kidnapping their infant queen, and ultimately won the war.

With their leader gone, Thanos' empire would collapse in on itself. The Blood Brothers were captured and sentenced to 44 life sentences in the Kyln, but escaped and joined Captain Glory and his Lethal Legion. Nebula pursued Gamora, focing the latter to kill her. Gamora herself was pardoned for her contributions to the Resistance, but was denied involvement with New Xandar; instead, she joined the Guardians of the Galaxy. Until the present day, 7801, Nova Corps is still tracking, trying, and sentencing the remainder of Thanos' army.
