The Soul Stone is a major item in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. A mysterious amber-hued gem of immense power, it lies forgotten amongst the wreckage of the Quarantine Zone after a separation from its previous owner.

Background

The Soul Stone's origin is wrapped in mystery. Little is known about it, only that the equally mysterious Adam Warlock somehow came to have the stone embedded in his forehead. He was found drifting through space in a bizarre cocoon by deep space mining colony ravaged by a plague and was awakened by their chief scientist, Raker. Adam used his powers to heal them, for which they began to worship him. Soon the Universal Church of Truth formed around him.

However, as Adam's following grew, a darker persona formed within the Stone and would become the Magus, urging Adam to feed on Raker and his crew. Adam asked Raker to remove the Stone, which Raker did and took the Stone for himself. However, at some point, the Soul Stone ended up within the Quarantine Zone with Magus still imprisoned.

Description

The soul stone takes the form of a small amber gem . Though the stone's full capabilities have not yet been seen, it is immensely powerful. Able to contain an incalculable number of souls and even imprison a being as strong as Magus. The soul stone is also extremely durable to the point of being physically indestructible as Rocket's blaster and Star-Lord's quad guns left no marks when firing on it . The soul stone can also erect powerful barriers enough to stop a planetoid thrown by Magus .

Gameplay

During Chapter 1: A Risky Gamble, the Stone is found by the Guardians of the Galaxy during their mission to find a sellable monster within the zone. Unaware of its origins, Peter Quill decides to pick up the Stone, which almost fries his hand. The Magus escapes the stone and seemingly disappears, but later attacks and consumes the thumper-attracted Acanti and the whole crew is forced to flee the illegal area.

When the Guardians are busy on Seknarf Nine in Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, Ko-Rel begins to investigate Raker and the zone and unfortunately finds the Stone. Her daughter Nikki disobediently sneaks after her and accidentally becomes the new vessel for the entity Magus. Nikki can be seen holding the Stone in her hand in Chapter 8: The Matriarch, when she pulls the Guardians into the illusion of a happy world.

Raker takes the advantage and uses the Magus-infested Nikki for his cause and to conquer the galaxy. The Guardians then dismantle the Church, Adam Warlock gains back the Stone once more and seems to be able to control the dangerous power within.

In Chapter 16: Magus, it turns out, that the Magus is too strong and possesses Adam. The Guardians must fight Magus. Near the end of the battle, Peter Quill uses the Stone to imprison the Magus once more at the cost of his life.

The Universal Church of Truth's new "Matriarch" has been observed wielding a mysterious amber-hued gem. Although Nova Corps has only scattered and wildly varying reports, witnesses claim to have seen her channeling her "faith" power through it and transforming defiant captives into willing servants.

It appears to be the same stone previously embedded in the forehead of the Church's first "divine vessel," Adam Warlock, also known as "Him." Little is known about the gem, its origin wrapped in mystery just like its former owner. It appears to be an artifact of immense power, once glowing brilliantly as Warlock healed the sick. First-hand accounts describe a disastrous separation between the gem and its bearer, who believed it was feeding on souls and corrupting his own.

• In the comics, the Soul Gem is one of six Infinity Stones, which when assembled together, are said to grant the user infinite power and which originate from a primordial universe.
