Peter Jason Quill, who goes by the moniker Star-Lord, is the protagonist of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. The former Crown Prince of the Spartoi Empire, now that his crimes as a space pirate have been pardoned, he currently serves as the self-proclaimed leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, working alongside Drax, Gamora Zen-Whoberi, Rocket and Groot.

Background[]

Peter Quill is the son of Meredith Quill and J'Son, ruler of the planet Spartax who left before Peter was born. Hailing from Missouri, Peter grew up in a farm built by his maternal grandparents, Gene and Molly Quill, and had a mostly carefree childhood on Earth. Although Meredith told Peter from a young age that his absent father was an alien, Peter himself did not believe her, but grew up wondering what might be out there.

Sometime after both Gene and Molly passed away, on his thirteenth birthday, Peter wanted to go see Knight of the Cosmos with his friends. Meredith, aware that they were being watched, thus decided to give him his birthright, the Element Guns. While inspecting the weapons, Chitauri ships descended and surrounded the house. Peter tried to defend himself, but a Chitauri seized him and Meredith was shot. As she died, Peter was made to board the ship and taken to a prison on Chitauri Prime. His possessions—his guns, Chewbacca Toy and cassette player—were confiscated. His abduction served to keep the Spartoi Empire inert long enough for the Chitauri to destroy Spartax' communications and military capabilities, eliminating their threat before the Galactic War.

Peter was held as a prisoner for four Earth years and a few days. He couldn't communicate with his cell mates at all without a translation implant, but he got used to them not lasting long due to the Chitauri's gladiatorial games. Three years into his sentence, however, Yondu Udonta was taken as a prisoner of war and put in Peter's cell. Yondu knew English and offered to translate in exchange for extra rations.

About a year later, they managed to escape together—with Peter reclaiming his possessions—and delivered a transport full of stolen supplies into the hands of the Resistance. Yondu then invited Peter to join the Ravagers, who became like a dysfunctional family to him. Feeling like he really belonged, Peter spent the rest of the war hitting Chitauri supply chains. But when Peter heard that Earth was in danger and the Chitauri launched a sneak attack on a Resistance outpost on Mercury, he convinced Yondu to help. By the time they arrived, the outpost had fallen, but Ko-Rel's squad had survived. While Yondu left, Peter stayed and helped retake the outpost in a risky counterattack. At the time, Peter hooked up with Ko-Rel, giving her his Chewie toy, but they ultimately went their separate ways.

After the war, Peter went to Spartax, hoping to meet his father, but with the Empire in political shambles, J'Son never saw Peter. Knowing himself to be unwanted, Peter rejoined the Ravagers, and remained a pirate for nine years until Yondu kidnapped Idera's Sacred Heart, which Peter felt was wrong. He told Yondu that they had to give her back, but he disagreed, so Peter stole the Milano and took the girl. While trying to return her, Ko-Rel—now a Nova Corps officer—intercepted him. Ko-Rel's disappointment made Peter want to turn over a new leaf. He agreed to testify against Yondu regarding the kidnapping, for which he was granted immunity and charges were dropped against him. Yondu thus ended up in the Kyln, and put a bounty on Peter's Earth name.

Because of the bounty, Peter met Rocket and Groot. Peter could not outrun the latter, and so convinced them to start a business enterprise together, the Guardians of the Galaxy. After some time, they were joined by Gamora and Drax. Self-described as "heroes-for-hire", after fourteen missions together, they have yet to achieve success.

Personality[]

Peter is a cocky but well-meaning man who, as an adult, remains attached to the things he loved as a child. His room in the Milano has a number of objects from Earth, he greatly cherishes his 'tunes'—his cassette player being a gift from his late mother—, and often makes references to Earth culture, even if his teammates don't understand them. His Star-Lord alias comes from his favorite band, and his jacket still bears their logo patch from his childhood. Peter loves "cool" or "awesome" things, and tries to comes across as such; however, he is oftentimes clumsy and his piloting skills—according to his teammates—leave much to be desired.

However, he no longer is the idealistic kid that once got a black eye for standing up for another. Being a con man and ex-pirate himself, he is well aware that "life is complicated and that things are never simple". Still, there is a part of him that wants to be a hero, and has risked his life to help others—participating in the Battle of Mercury, returning Idera's Sacred Heart, jumping after Nikki, investigating the converted Hala's Hope to find her and Ko-Rel—even before the guilt-ridden nightmare that propels him to stop running away and take a more proactive stance against the Church. Although Peter has a predilection toward crime, the Worldmind believes that he could be rehabilitated.

Despite his troubled past, Peter remains a positive person—such as assuming the better of Groot's unintelligible words, or generally looking on the bright side of things—and isn't shy to compliment those he knows, such as his grandmother's or Nikki's art, Rocket's gizmos, Gamora's skills, Groot's level-headedness, etc. It doesn't mean he is unaffected, however. Most notably, and perhaps stemming from his paternal abandonment, Peter is emotionally immature, promiscuous (dangerously so, since "half the girls" he has dated have tried to kill him), and rarely owning up to his mistakes. Peter has also admitted to once having suicidal urges during his imprisonment by the Chitauri, and mentions several times that he hopes to never see them again, even twelve years after the War.

Referred to as the "heart of the team",[1] Peter serves as the negotiator, either with clients or amongst his dysfunctional teammates. Explicitly "trying to be supportive" in his Journal, Peter usually finds himself either defending someone, including himself, or refocusing them on missions. While Peter doesn't inspire much respect from the others due to his usual clumsiness and other flaws, the other Guardians do defer to him as their leader. In fact, Peter is initially the only one in good standing with everyone, with Rocket tolerating him (calling Peter a "swell guy"), Drax distrusting everyone but Peter, and Gamora appreciating Peter's trust.

Gameplay[]

Peter is the only character directly controlled by the player during level exploration and combat, but as the Guardians' leader, he is able to issue commands to the others. While using his personal cassette player, he is also able to motivate, or revive, the team via the Huddle mechanic, and boost their damage by choosing the correct words. His Abilities are varied, with two being damaging attacks, and the other two meant for tactical management.

In battle, his Element Guns will never run out of ammo, but they'll enter into a brief cooldown period after unloading a whole "clip". The guns are soon upgraded with a Rapid Reload mechanism, while a number of additional Perks are up to the player's choice and the amount of Components they find, which is made easier with the Components Localizer perk. Other perks of note are the moves Charged Shot and Super Quill Punch. As the game progresses, the player unlocks four elemental ammo types to use against susceptible enemies: Ice, Lightning, Wind, and Plasma. His blasters deal decent damage, but he also has melee attacks at his disposal, as well as mobility thanks to his Jet Boots. Last but not least is his Visor, which allows him to scan objects of interest, or analyze enemies with Tactical Scan.

Regarding items, besides his standard look, Peter has twelve other outfits—one inspired by the 2014 film, and seven taken from the comics. He has three Collectibles related to his past:

He also has several related trophies: "Self-Improvement", "Altitude Adjustment", "Bullet Hell" and, linked to his Element Guns, "Flash Freeze", "Shock and Awe", "Fan Friction", and "Lava Launcher".

PETER JASON QUILL (AKA STAR-LORD)

<<WARNING: Compendium moderators have not been able to validate the changes made by user ST4R-LORD and have flagged this entry for reversion.>>

Peter Jason Quill, aka Star Lord. A notorious space adventurer. A worshiped galactic hero. Where to even start? Earth. The 80s, when everything was brighter, louder, and better. Including young Peter Quill. He was living with the best mom out of all the moms in the universe until a bunch of lizard-face alien scutbags showed up and ruined everything.
Quill spent way too long locked up in a Chitauri slammer, where he met a grumpy Centaurian with a wicked mohawk named Yondu Udonta. The two of them completely outwitted the idiot jailers and got the hell outta Dodge.

Yondu was captain of space pirate fleet named the Ravagers, who begged Star-Lord to step up and teach them how to become the scourge of the seven seas. Um. In Space. Anyway, the Chitauri started bombing everybody and it looked like the end of everything. Everywhere. But whoosh — here comes Captain Star-Lord and his Ravagers to totally save the day. I mean, yeah, some other people helped.

Star-Lord has recently put together a ridiculously overpowered team of heroes-for-hire called the Guardians of the Galaxy. Together, they can take on any job, no matter how tough. Seriously. Find us on BAGOO! We're looking for work.

Please?

NOTES: Peter Jason Quill, AKA "Star-Lord," is a Human/Spartoi hybrid and former Crown Prince of the Spartoi Empire. Quill's involvement with the Ravager Space Pirates has led to the generation of this file.

Despite Quill's predilection toward crime, the Worldmind acknowledges his contributions to the Resistance during the Galactic War. Notably during the Battle of Mercury in the Sol System.

As such, the Worldwind feels that Quill can be rehabilitated with a failure margin of 32.67%.

ADDENDUM 1: Quill agreed to testify against Yondu Udonta and the Ravager Space Pirates regarding their involvement in the kidnapping of the child known as "Idera's Sacred Heart." In doing so, he was granted immunity and charges have been dropped against him.

ADDENDUM 2: Quill has recently registered a new business enterprise under the name "Gardeners of the Galaxy" with other known criminals. The intent and legitimacy of this enterprise, which bears no relation to botany, remains dubious. Further monitoring will be required.

Trivia[]

  • His look was designed to be a time capsule of 1980s culture with a sci-fi twist that includes an exaggerated hairstyle, his trademark leather jacket, and other small details that are cherished memories. One of these design elements is the Star-Lord patch on Quill's jacket back, which is from his favorite rock band.[2]
  • Peter's main outfit was modeled by George Nagulov,[3] while the head (face, beard and hairstyle) and final polish were done by Genci Buxheli. Texturing was done by both at different stages in development.[4]
