Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Wiki

A personal cassette player is a human-made portable audio player. One of these items, owned by Peter Quill, plays a major role in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. He carries it around all the time to play his favourite music from 1980s Earth and uses it to rally the crew in Huddles.

Background[]

Sometime during the 1980s, Meredith Quill acquired this cassette player and gave it to her son, Peter, as a present. On his thirteenth birthday, Meredith called for Peter but he got distracted, listening to his new Space Rider tape. As he didn't turn up, she went to his room and asked for his headphones. After she left, Peter kept on listening to it for a bit longer.

The cassette player—along with his Chewbacca Toy, a ten dollar bill, and his Element Guns—remained with Peter as the Chitauri kidnapped him and took him to a prison on Chitauri Prime. They were all confiscated, but four years later, during his escape with Yondu Udonta, he went back for his cassette player and his other possessions.

Description[]

This personal stereo ("Melodyrunner 2000") has a battered yellow and gray case, and is connected to headphones with red circumaural earpads. It has a belt clip, which Peter uses to carry it with himself at all times.

Gameplay[]

This item is part of the Huddle combat mechanic, in which Peter listens to music from the 1980s to boost his own performance during battle. Its Galactic Compendium is unlocked by default. During Prologue: Meredith, the player can listen to the entirety of Space Rider.

The cassette player has a special role in Chapter 14: Into The Fire, when Rocket uses it to distract enemy forces in the final battle with the Universal Church of Truth, releasing it with some technical enhancement into space. During this time, Huddles cannot be invoked by the player. It is eventually returned to Peter by Lady Hellbender.

STAR-LORD'S PERSONAL CASSETTE PLAYER

Star-Lord, leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, calls this Earth artifact a "personal cassette player" and claims it was a gift from his mother. If this is true, this primitive relic has held up remarkably well considering all it's been through—confiscations, explosions, the Galactic War, and extreme overuse. Three cassettes have been chewed up beyond repair since Star-Lord was first kidnapped by the Chitauri, but he claims to always keep a backup copy. This low-tech device appears to have a notable impact on his combat prowess, though there is no scientific justification. Rumor has it that once he shot a would-be music thief in the back.
