The Guardians of the Galaxy is the titular group of heroes-for-hire in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Led by Star-Lord, they are a team of self-proclaimed heroes but primarily serve as a mercenary outfit. Their base of operations is a former Ravager scout ship, the Milano.
Story[]
Background[]
In 7798, Peter Quill disagreed with Ravager pirate leader Yondu Udonta about the kidnapping of Idera's Sacred Heart and stole the Milano, taking it upon himself to return the girl back to her homeworld. During the journey, he was intercepted by Nova Centurion Ko-Rel. Peter—wanting to turn a new leaf—agreed to testify against Yondu in exchange for immunity. Charges against Peter were dropped, while Yondu was taken to the Kyln and the Ravagers disbanded. Enraged by the betrayal, Yondu put a bounty on Peter's Earth name.
Sometime in 7800, bounty hunter duo Rocket and Groot accepted the contract to capture Peter, who was on Malador.[1] During the encounter Peter ended up unable to outrun Groot,[2] with Rocket having him at point-blank range;[1] seeing as they were to turn him in,[1] he proposed to start a legitimate business enterprise together as "heroes-for-hire". He promised that it'd fun[3] and that he'd pay them double Yondu's bounty in time. Groot and Rocket were somehow convinced, although the latter privately considered the Milano as collateral to their deal,[1] and they never claimed the bounty.
The trio soon realized that they needed to recruit some powerful, feared people if they wanted to be taken seriously. They decided to bring in Drax—who spent seven years in the Kyln—to serve as the muscle of the group,[3] with Peter recruiting him on the day of his release. Hoping to prove he was more than "the Destroyer", Drax agreed to join the group.[4] His first mission with the team was a disaster.
Last to join was Gamora Zen-Whoberi (advised to do so by her friend Mantis), whom Peter hired for a protection contract.[2] Longing to belong somewhere, she joined despite her reservations that they might end up rejecting her like everyone else.[3] Drax, due to his past history with Thanos, was immediately distrustful of Gamora, calling her 'Murderous Sorceress'. On that first mission, the team was eclectic, and apparently, Rocket seemed like the only one who knew what he was doing, even if it was in the most chaotic way possible. Peter, for his part, spent most of that contract flirting with the waitresses. Somehow they ended in a ventilation system, where Rocket found detonation charges.[2] Apparently, it involved saving Mantis in some way.[4]
Presumably around this time, Rocket and Groot were left in charge of registering for a Nova Corps licensing permit. Rocket let Groot fill the paperwork, but he registered the group as the 'Gardeners of the Galaxy', so Rocket fixed it with an addendum. Since that first mission when Gamora joined, the crew have been on fourteen missions together, although none have been particularly successful. One appears to have been a "smash and grab" on Citopia; another took place on Contraxia, during which Gamora turned into a teapot (which she would count as a "mistake", instead of a mission). Another was on Paramatar, where they were ambushed by hatchet-wielding goons who were after Peter. On Honchi, Drax trusted Rocket, but the latter repaid that by attempting to rob their employer.[2] The thirteenth mission was on Oblitus, for Hark Taphod; they "nailed it" but got paid 100,000 units of useless protein paste due to a misunderstanding on Peter's part.[5]

Gameplay[]
The player controls Star-Lord directly and can issue commands to the other members in combat and exploration via Guardians Mode. Each Guardian has three Abilities plus one Mega Ability to unlock. Over the course of the game, the players also can find a variety of Costumes and Collectible items for each Guardian, which trigger conversations on the Milano and affect the post-credits ending.
Records[]
The Guardians of the Galaxy are registered as "legally incorporated heroes-for-hire" under permit 67398-2, although their record has yet to include anything fitting that description. They appear to be primarily mercenaries, accepting low-paying, bottom-tier jobs from the BAGOO! bounty hunter board with an astonishingly low success rate. In fact, users of the board now use "GotG" as a term for contract failure.
Example: "Whoops, I GotG'd that job!"
The most notable Guardians include Gamora Zen-Whoberi, daughter of Thanos, and Drax the Destroyer, slayer of Thanos. Their captain, Star-Lord, is a former Ravager pirate and con man who listed the Milano (M-Class Ravager scout vessel) as the group's base of operations. They also harbor Rocket, a deadly and wildly unpredictable experimental Kree bioweapon, and a violent flora colossus named Groot.

Trivia[]
- Knowhere and Contraxia are the Guardians' favorite "drinking holes".
- Their Nova Corps licensing permit reads "Not the most well-known heroes you could hire, but definitely in the top five of most awesome names," and provides a short description for all contributing members except Peter, supposedly due to a character limitation.
- Twitter illustrations by Toni Infante[6] and Taurin Clarke[7] are based on the covers for Kiss' 1982 album Creatures of the Night and Europe's 1986 album The Final Countdown, respectively.
- An extended version of Infante's artwork was used as the cover for Games Tribune Magazine (shortened to GTM) issue 71.[8]
