A cold case file is a file from a crime that has not yet been fully resolved and is not the subject of a current criminal investigation. In Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, there is a particular case file that serves as a Guardian Collectible for Groot.

The item can be found in Chapter 5: Due or Die near a control panel inside the station. If picked up, it will trigger a conversation with Groot on the Milano.

The Collector, Taneleer Tivan, wields tremendous influence and does not deal with his problems through proper legal channels, especially with his Emporium hosted on Knowhere. However, he did file one criminal complaint with Nova Corps, seemingly out of desperation. The claim opens as follows:
"Distinguished law enforcers of Nova Corps, I have been wronged in a most egregious way and require your specialties to remedy the situation. My precious Flora Colossus, the last of his kind, was snatched away by some brazen hoodlum. I have scant details to provide: the thief was about a third of the size of a man, wore a ludicrous mask, and had a rather dashing tail."
