The Chitauri Empire is a major organization in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. A violent race, the Chitauri formed an alliance with Thanos and waged war on the rest of galaxy during the Galactic War.
Background[]
The Chitauri teamed up with Thanos to begin the Galactic War that stretched to all corners of the galaxy and raged on for several years. Prior to the war, they were able to locate Peter Quill on Earth and use him as ransom to force his father to surrender the planet Spartax.
The Chitauri ultimately lost the war when Gamora Zen-Whoberi led a stealth mission on Chitauri Prime alongside Ko-Rel, while the Kree Empire and Resistance fleets led a pronged attacked. The capture of their infant queen forced the Chitauri to surrender. After the war, their use of spaceships and weaponry was banned and are now closely watched.
Gameplay[]
Chitauri soldiers appear during Peter Quill's flashback in Chapter 6: Between a Rock and a Hard Place and his Promise in Chapter 8: The Matriarch. They also appear as Fog Creatures conjured from the Languishing Fog in Chapter 10: Test of Faith.
Hissing sounds made by the Chitauri can be heard when the crew enters the Continuum Cortex. Chitauri shipwrecks and technology can be seen in the Quarantine Zone and on Seknarf Nine.

The Chitauri are a hate-filled race of shape-shifters and evolutionary offshoots of the Skrull. They believe their existential purpose is to expand their empire through the destruction or subjugation of all life in the universe. This doctrine led them into launching the Galactic War. They nearly conquered everything until the combined forces of the Kree Empire and the Resistance fleet pushed them back to Chitauri Prime and put their infant queen at risk. Unable to function without their monarch, the Chitauri surrendered.
Now they are a broken people. They are forbidden spacefaring vessels and any technology that could be considered weaponry. Under close watch by a council of united planets, Chitauri Prime has become a prison world. However, those who have faced them in battle know that they are insidious schemers and infiltrators. Many worry that they are already plotting their revenge.
