Chapter 8: The Matriarch is the eighth of sixteen chapters in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. The chapter begins on Sacrosanct, where the crew meets Nikki again, only to quickly realise that their actions in the Quarantine Zone had dire consequences.
Summary[]
The Guardians unwillingly follow Raker onto the Sacrosanct as he explains that the Church worships a god who has made The Promise to return all the dead back to life. To fulfill this promise, it must be accepted by millions of followers whose Faith Energy can be harnessed by the Church's Matriarch, who happens to be eager to meet the Guardians of the Galaxy. That is because the Matriarch is in fact Nikki Gold, who has converted to the Church in hopes of bringing Ko-Rel back from the dead after she was killed by the purple-and-black mass of energy. She attempts to turn the Guardians to her side by showing them a vision of their loved ones return to life, including Peter reuniting with his mother. However, Peter breaks the illusion by killing his "mother" and proceeds to flee out of Sacrosanct with the rest of his shaken friends.
