The cash-strapped Guardians are about to enter the Quarantine Zone, a restricted area of space, in hopes of capturing a valuable monster.
― Replay summary

Chapter 1: A Risky Gamble is the first of sixteen chapters in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Star-Lord and his crew enter the Quarantine Zone, a high-security Nova Corps sector in the Andromeda Galaxy, in order to catch a rare monster they intend to sell to Lady Hellbender.

Summary[]

Star-Lord is awoken by Drax as they near the Quarantine Zone set up by the Nova Corps around one of the last battlefields of the Galactic War. The Guardians are here, as revealed through their ceaseless banter, to find a rare monster that Lady Hellbender is willing to pay a pretty penny for. In order to find the monster, Rocket, Groot, and Star-Lord venture through the Quarantine Field on-foot to place "thumper" devices that will create sounds designed to lure the monster to the Guardians.

Before they can place the last thumper, Peter and Rocket stumble upon a strange stone that unleashes a mass of black and purple energy upon touching Peter's skin. The two move on with the mission, accidentally capture Kammy the space llama, and confront the legendary monster they intend to sell... only for the mass of energy to kill the monster in a violent attack that de-stabilizes the Zone. The Guardians rush onto the Milano and escape the Zone just in the nick of time. However, they are greeted on the other side by a Nova Corps patrol ship, the Hala's Hope.

Outfits[]

First outfit chapter1

Jump down the little gap and enter the old vessel.

Walkthrough[]

After you wake up, you can look around the ship and speak with the Guardians. You can find the archive Team Costumes in Rocket's room (which can be picked up anytime until Chapter 13: Against All Odds). Here is your first dialogue choice: "Reassure Groot," or "Spook him."

When you're sure everything was discovered, go to the cockpit and speak with Gamora. Note that if you sit down, you'll proceed with the story, and there's no going back in case you want to listen to their conversations. After a short explanation by Gamora, enter the code « 0 - 4 - 5 - 1 » (here, it can be fun to mistype and listen to the crew banter) and watch the cinematic as you enter the Quarantine Zone.

After Team Rocket exits the Milano and places the first thumper, while Green Team remains aboard and flies away, you can move and the Visor tutorial pops-up. Pick up the Components Groot is looking at on the ground, and the ones on a platform to your right, and the archive Nano-Resin Incident Report (located above a yellow crate to your left). Follow Rocket and pick up Components before the entering the tunnel. Upon reaching the Nova frigate, you get the dialogue choice: "Make some cash", "Build reputation", or "(...)".

Jump from platform to platform. In one of them, there is a quick time event where Peter almost falls down. Pick up the Components on the path, then continue. Again, there is a dialogue choice: "Defend new members", "Let him reminisce", or say nothing.

Slide down the wreck, and Rocket will call this area a "dead end". Look around to the right and jump down the gap in the blue platform. Pick up Components and Rocket's film outfit, then get out and go into the half-open hatch. To the left of this corridor is the archive Pride and Fall on the floor. Advance some more; slide down to the right, where you will find Components in a spiky platform, and some more by jumping onto the cave-like platform in the center. Reaching the place where Rocket and Groot stop, you get the tutorial on shooting with the Element Guns and destroying brittle material.

Immediately after jumping, Rocket will see the "ship-eating parasites". Shoot at them and trigger Rocket's 50 challenge, which will make a scoreboard appear on top of the screen. Jump into the corridor where the parasites were, and walk until you find the archive QZ Disposal on the ground.

Move further on. Peter will step on an unstable platform and fall into the room below. Pick up the Components, and crouch-walk through a small tunnel and come out in a room with brittle material. Destroying it all will reveal the Ravager Comm Bracelet in a corner to the right, and will bring down a large hatch to create an exit. Move on and reach another slide; upon reaching the botton, you run into a group of Voxiplodes for the first battle in the game, and thus the lock-on, shoot, and melee attack tutorial. Upon defeating them all, jump up the platforms, pick up Components from a corner, pick up Failed to Send Message from the floor, and shoot brittle material surrounded by nano-resin to get out. Around this time, you get another dialogue choice: "Trust in the plan", "Pitch backup plan", or say nothing.

You will reach the egress and find a long thin metal rail that serves as a bridge; Groot is waiting midway on a platform, while Rocket is on the other side of the chasm. Due to the debris falling down and the gap being too wide to simply jump, the Guardians Mode tutorial appears. Pick up Components to the left, then follow Rocket. To cross the next gap, destroy brittle material to reveal a mooring that Groot can use to make a bridge. Pick up Components on the path, and make a dialogue choice: "Recommend escape", "Recommend surrender", or say nothing.

You then jump down onto the location of the second thumper. Due to a malfunction, Peter must look for a charged battery; you can use the visor too find it. Locate brittle material below blue machinery, and shoot at it until a box-like object falls down. Pick up the battery and take it to Rocket. Fight more Voxiplodes; use melee attacks and Entangle when possible. After all green Voxiplodes are gone, a second wave with large purple ones follows. These will spawn smaller green ones when destroyed. Once defeated, go up on the ramp where the purple Voxiplode came from. As you are about the leave the missile bay, you get a dialogue choice: "Promise riches", "Sell the dream", or say nothing.

Follow Rocket and Groot and you will be confronted the gigantic Kree Sentry. You get another choice: "Ask how he knows", "Brag about Milano", or say nothing. Before going all the way its arm, shoot brittle material to the left to reveal a platform and jump onto it; you will find two more parasite nests and Components. Shoot more brittle material to return to main path and pick up more Components. Finding yourself to the side of the sentry's face, shoot the brittle material on its eye to reveal mooring for Groot to make a bridge. Inside the robot head, there is a lot of parasites; try to shoot as many nests as possible. The is also the archive Unthinkable in the center. Pick the Components just outside the area.

Move on to the third thumper location and place it on the designated spot. Fight off the Voxiplodes and Wuruum, and read the Ability Points tutorial. Follow Rocket towards the mining rig through an unstable area, and have Groot build a bridge. Watch the cinematic in which Groot saves Rocket but ends up having to follow a different path. From the edge, you can shoot more parasite nests. You have a dialogue choice: "Blame Rocket", "Cover for him", or say nothing. Then another, if you chose the former: "Confront Rocket", "Brush it off", or stay silent. After jumping over the platform, turn over the nano-resin 'tower' to find Components and a parasite nest. On the nex platform there are Components hidden in a corner.

Reach the turbine, put on the visor, and ask Rocket to enter the Access Point to rearrange the blades. Once inside, destroy the parasite nests and the brittle materal to reveal an exit. Move on some cables, but the place will collapse and Peter and Rocket will slide down a tunnel; watch out for the obstacles and parasite nests. Instead of falling into nothingness, the Milano will appear. You will have to run over the hull and then double-jump with a quick time event to reach the platform. As debris rains upon them, run through the passage until you reach another quick time event and, shortly after, a pitch-black tunnel.

Soul Stone

The mysterious gem.

After Rocket turns on the life support systems, you get one last chance at shooting parasites. After the nest is destroyed and the scoreboard disappears, Peter and Rocket will see and fight over the Soul Stone only for Peter to get it first; however, a purple entity comes out of it and leaves soon after. Groot will then join the two again. Here you get a dialogue choice: "Downplay the creature", "Come clean", or say nothing.

Turn right to go through a gap in the nano-resin and pick up the Groot's film outfit, then leave. In the next room, look in every corner for about five piles of Components. After Peter says he'll find a "side passage", push the Heavy Obstacle away and use the Workbench to craft Perks. Use a Rapid Reload to make a way to the next room, but the pipes break down and Peter will fall down directly in front of a Moniscobule. After defeating them, climb onto higher ground. Destroy the reinforced brittle material to reveal the Spinal Control Unit. Mone to the next room, where you can pick up Components behind a mineral cube, then jump through the window and two Shollocks appear. The Stagger Bar is introduced and Drax and Gamora join the battle.

After the fight, have Gamora cut a High Tension Wire to drop a Heavy Object, then make Drax move it to the indicated place. You can also move it to the other side of the room to pick up Components. Next to the exit, shoot at brittle material to give you access to Advanced Components. Pick up Basic Components on the path. A dialogue choice: "Bet on cute", "Bet on scary", or stay silent. Shoot at brittle material to [...] Pick up the archive A Miracle! near some pipes.

Slide down and reunite with Groot and Rocket in the next room, where Voxiplodes, Moniscobules and Shollocks will attack the party. Everynoe but Peter will be incapacitated, and the game will introduce the Huddle mechanic. After defeating all the enemies, make Rocket open the door via the Network Interface.

Acanti Magus

Acanti attacked by the strange entity.

After briefly seeing the Milano, you continue to a dark room where Rocket installs the last thumper. The mysterious monster will appear, but is too fast to be caught; the visor doesn't work, but you should destroy the crates it uses to hide. Then try to lock onto it and have Groot use Entangle. After capturing the llama, an Acanti will appear, but before the Guardians can engage it in battle, the purple entity from before will attack it and the Guardians will run back to the ship.

Fly the Milano out of the Quarantine Zone. Watch out for flying debris and fire at all obstacles, then use the 'blue button' (the afterburners) Rocket tells you about and fly faster. Although you manage to escape destruction, the Milano will get zapped, and game's title will appear.

Trivia[]

  • The code 0-4-5-1 to enter into the Quarantine Zone is also used in Eidos-Montreál's Deus Ex series and other games. Originally, it was used by Looking Glass Studios, the developer of System Shock, and was their office key code.[2]
