Chapter 15: Broken Promises is the fifteenth of sixteen chapters in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.
Summary[]
The Guardians of the Galaxy arrive just before the ritual begins, but are single-handedly defeated by Raker's magic. As he restrains them, Nikki fully gives herself to the Magus as it expands across the galaxy like a cosmic mold. Hopeless, the Guardians are only saved because Peter hears Ko-Rel's voice call out to him, bringing him into Nikki's vision of the Promise. Inside her head, Peter does his best to destroy her fantasy family life, convince her she isn't his daughter, and that Ko-Rel is well and truly dead. Nikki admits her Promise is false, but can't bring herself to live in a world without her mom. Peter comforts her and tells her how he dealt with the grief of losing his mother, by a little gesture like lighting a candle to remember her by. That's just enough to convince Nikki to reject the Magus, ending the ritual before the Magus can totally take control.
Furious, Grand Unifier Raker battles the Guardians and is killed as Adam Warlock absorbs the Magus into himself and liberates all those in the galaxy enslaved by the Promise. Having defeated the Universal Church of Truth, the five Guardians, Adam Warlock, and Nikki board the Milano and ride off into their next adventure... until Adam starts to feel sick.
